Bikepacking Annapurna Circuit

The following was taken from my Strava posts throughout this adventure.
You can view the video on YouTube here
Annapurna circuit – Day 1 – Pokhara to Bhotewodar
Hot one today, max of 31 degrees c and very high humidity especially on the climbs. Mostly tarmac roads with the odd really shit rocky section every now and then. Got a little further than expected today but not going to push hard on this route as there is a lot more elevation gain coming up and I’m touring not racing. Not taking a lot of photos as am filming it so watch this space on my YouTube channel in the not too distant future

Annapurna circuit – Day 2 – Bhotewodar to Jagat
A lot of rocky steep roads with some hike a bike sections today and just as hot as yesterday at 32 degrees c. As much if not a little more elevation gain than yesterday but 26km less distance. A sign of things to come I guess

Annapurna circuit – Day 3 – Jagat to Chame
Much harder today with plenty of hike then bike a bit sections. There seems to be a pattern emerging 😆

Annapurna circuit – Day 4 – Chame to Manang
An easier elevation gain day but reaching 3500m altitude it’s getting slightly harder to breathe so am taking the recommended acclimation day here spending two nights. Will most likely go for a hike tomorrow to higher ground tomorrow to acclimate for the big dance in a couple of days. Also from now on till I reach the highest point of the circuit I will only be climbing maximum 500m elevation in a day if not descending to combat the effects of AMS (acute mountain sickness)

Annapurna circuit – Day 5 – Gangapurna Lake & Glacier Viewpoint acclimation hike
Hiked further than the actual trail to get to 4000m

Annapurna circuit – Day 6 – Manang to Thorong Phedi
“Rode” with some other bikepackers today, Jochen and Anil. Made it further than expected today. Above the tree line now. Plenty of HAB with tomorrow promising even more gradient to get to the top of and over the pass. Btw my front brake no longer functions so just have rear brake only

Annapurna circuit – Day 7 – Thorong Phedi to Muktinath
Made it to the top of the pass today but wouldn’t you know it the rear brake was only working at 1/4 power so both brakes not really working. Ended up pushing the bike the whole day. Glad to be in the hotel now as it was a big day. Getting the brakes fixed later this afternoon so should be back up and going again tomorrow

Annapurna circuit – Day 8 – Muktinath to Tatopani
Both brakes are now working so was able to ring the final little bit of single track this morning which was fun. Rib was hurting whilst descending on the single track though. During lunch and for a few hours in the afternoon there were headwind gusts up to 55kmph whilst riding on the highway then had a massive downhill which sometimes had only one lane on dirt road sections but made it to the hotel in Tatopani well before sunset so happy with that. Longest day in the saddle on this ride so far

Annapurna circuit – Day 9 – Tatopani to Nayapul
Not a long day today as am four days ahead of schedule following other people’s itineraries taking into account possible acute mountain sickness, going slower than normal and bad weather, which didn’t eventuate, so decided to stop at this small village and soak in life as a local for one night. Seeing as though I’m back to lower altitude it’s much warmer again. A lot of people passing through with large trucks, buses and many many motorcyclists. Plenty of locals bartering goods and services and talking local gossip and kids playing soccer or badminton in the street. Most people were very impressed that I cycled the Annapurna circuit and that I came from Australia to do it. Tomorrow will be the last day of this adventure with one more climb out of Nayapul then back to Pokhara, another short day

Annapurna circuit – Day 10 – Nayapul to Pokhara – Finished
One last climb this morning then a long downhill back into Pokhara to complete the Annapurna circuit in less time than anticipated. Could have done it in a 9 days but it’s much hotter at lower elevation and I was in no rush. Time to wash my clothes, have a hot shower, eat something else other than Nepalese food (not that there’s anything wrong with it) and relax for a few days. Will upload a video to YouTube after I return to Australia after relaxing with friends in Hawaii for 2 weeks. Won’t be riding in Hawaii just doing nothing
